Spectacularly set amidst foothills and native forests, Ba Na Hills Golf Club is a breathtaking 18-hole championship course, the first to be designed by former number one Luke Donald. Characterised by generous fairways, bold bunkering, and subtly undulated greens that encourage a variety of approach shots, the course offers a compelling mix of challenge, enjoyment, and excitement and was deservedly voted Asia Best Golf Course five years in a row at the World Golf Awards.
The course winds its way through a series of valleys and is made up of two distinctly different nines. The front nine is in the traditional parkland style, with rolling fairways, bold bunkering and a smattering of rocky creeks and lakes.
It's the bunkers that you have to worry about to start with, notably at the gently doglegging par-4 3rd, where you must thread your way between the sand traps ranged to the left to open out your route to the heavily guarded green.
The 5th is a notable par-5, weighing in at a monstrous 708 yards and requiring a nervy drive over water to a fairway that snakes right and left through the trees, while the 7th is a medium-length par-4 that plays over a ridge to leave a downhill approach to an attractive green bordered by a lake.
The 8th is a memorable par-3 that plays from an elevated tee over water to a green that falls away sharply to some particularly hefty bunkers; the best play is a draw that hopefully leaves a little more margin for error, but anything short will see your ball run off into the large swale or the aforementioned sand traps.
By contrast, the back nine plays up into the hills, with some significant elevation changes making for some dramatic holes. Expect blind holes, severe doglegs and some spectacular views of the surrounding area.
The 11th is a magnificent par 5 that arcs around a lake and requires a deft touch to thread your way between the numerous bunkers whilst flirting with a watery grave, whilst the 12th is a picture-perfect par-3 with a skyline green that falls away sharply on all sides. If the pin is back left, beware the bunker lurking for those that overcook the tee shot and catch the downslope, as getting up and down from there is a real challenge.
There's more water in play at the lovely 14th, all the way down the left of the fairway before cutting across to protect the right hand side of the peninsula-style green, while the 16th is a dramatic downhill par 3 to an attractive island green. If the wind is up, it's a matter of praying you have the right club in your hand as the ball descends!
The 17th is a very attractive short par 4 that plays from an elevated tee and requires a nervy approach over water to a green guarded left and right by sand; get it right and there's a birdie for the taking before you take on the long par 4 that concludes the round.
Despite the five tee boxes, the elevation changes and forced water carries mean that this course might prove tough for high handicappers, and it should be noted that this is not a walking course, with carts definitely the order of the day given the climate and mountainous terrain. All 18 holes are floodlit, allowing for late-starting rounds.
The club boasts first-class facilities, including a modern clubhouse, grass driving range, practice areas, and a well-stocked pro shop, but it's the course that is the main draw, making Ba Na Hills Golf Club an essential stop on any Da Nang golf holiday. Highly recommended.
