Golden Sands Golf Resort (North Course)
About
Spectacular new links-style course billed as the toughest in Vietnam
Explicitly designed to be the most challenging course in Vietnam, the recently-opened North Course at Golden Sands Golf Resort is the first of two planned 18-hole courses. Spectacularly set along the coast near Hue, this links-style course measures a whopping 7,519 yards from the back, and when you factor in the coastal winds, the undulating fairways and huge waste bunkers, it certainly lives up to its billing.
The fairways are fairly generous, but the lush green of the grass is offset by expansive sand areas and strategically-located bunkers. The main challenges come on approach, with several greens featuring large slopes and mounds, putting a premium on accuracy. The greens themselves are huge and undulating, so making the putting surface in regulation is no guarantee of par.
Despite its challenges, the course is remarkably accommodating thanks to six sets of tee boxes which ensure that the course can suit all skill levels, from professionals to junior players.
The pick of the front nine is probably the 8th, a short par 3 that plays from an elevated tee to an expansive green surrounded by bunkers, but the main highlights of the course come on the back nine, which takes advantage of natural sand dunes and gently rolling topography with long views of the sea to the east.
The 13th is a par 3 that plays uphill away from the ocean to a green up on a ridge, while the 14th plays downhill towards the sea, offering great views and some tricky wind conditions.
The 15th is a quirky par 5 that plays along the coast, while the long par-3 16th features one of the largest greens you’ll ever see. With a large section of the front of the green sloping away from the green, anything too short will have you reaching for a pitching iron.
Golden Sands ends with two of the course’s most challenging holes. The 17th is a true three-shot par 5, ending with a shallow green that has a deep camouflaged low fronting it, while the 18th is a very long and challenging par 4 that will require two mighty blows if you want a hope of par.
Beyond the course, Golden Sands Golf Resort boasts a world-class clubhouse featuring luxury locker facilities, an extensive pro shop, and all-day dining options. The terrace makes for a great place to reflect on the day's round while enjoying stunning views across the course.
